มหาวิทยาลัยบอร์นมัธก่อตั้งเมื่อปี 1970 ตั้งอยู่ ณ เมืองบอร์นมัธ (Bournemouth) ซึ่งเป็นเมืองตากอากาศขนาดใหญ่บนชายฝั่งทางใต้ของอังกฤษ ตั้งอยู่ห่างจากลอนดอนลงไปทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ประมาณ 105 ไมล์และใช้เวลาเดินทางน้อยกว่า 2 ชั๋วโมงจากลอนดอนโดยรถไฟ บอร์นมัธ ได้ชื่อว่ามีชายหาดที่สวยที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งในประเทศอังกฤษโดยมีความยาวกว่า 22 กิโลเมตร ถือได้ว่าเป็นเมืองตากอากาศที่ขึ้นชื่อแห่งหนึ่งในยุโรป เป็นเมื่องที่มีสภาพอากาศที่ดี ในปีหนึ่งจะมีนักท่องเที่ยวเดินทางมาเมืองนี้ไม่ต่ำกว่าปีละ 5 ล้านคน สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวสำคัญคือ Bournemouth Oceanarium หรือเมืองใต้ทะเล นอกจากหาดทรายสีทองยาว และน้ำทะเลส่องประกายระยิบระยับ บอร์นมัธ ยังมีร้านค้า ภัตตาคาร และที่พักสำหรับวันหยุดให้เลือกมากมาย
